90 points Decanter
A dark garnet color with brilliancy, a bouquet of fresh dark berries and a touch of toasted notes. A hint of sweetness on the end of the palate that gives good balance to the well-developed tannins.
Serve as an aperitif wine with tomato and basic bruschetta or a summer salad with smoked duck breast.
Château Malescasse is located in Lamarque, between Margaux and Saint Julien. The vineyard sits at the highest point in the Médoc with a beautiful terroir. Acquired in 2012 by the Vignobles Austruy, this Cru Bourgeouis was recently awarded the designation of « Exceptional » in the new classification, recognizing the dedication and care in both the cellars and the vineyard.
Château Malescasse’s 40 hectares of vines crown these famous croupes graveleuses, the traditional Médoc name for the gently curving hills formed by large sheets of alluvium deposited by the Garonne River in the Quaternary period. Composed of varying proportions of sand, gravel and clay, in layers of varying thickness, they cover the limestone bedrock: they hold the secret to the great wines of the Left Bank.
A battery of wooden, stainless-steel and concrete vats of varying capacities are used to ensure that the different juices are brought out to their full potential, according to their individual personalities. To fully respect the quality of the raw material, the grapes are sorted and then transferred to the vats by gravity. Neither pumps nor pipes alter the precious juice. Gentle, selective methods for extracting tannins and aromatic compounds, long vatting periods and fermentation at highly controlled temperatures precede ageing in medium-heated barrels. The barrels are sourced from different coopers to further enhance the complexity of the wines. Today, the first wine accounts for no more than 45% of production. The second wine, Le Moulin Rose from Château Malescasse, is blended mainly with the youngest vines, and according to what the vintage “says”.
